Here’s what we’ve been up to around the farm this spring:
Babies, babies, babies! We’ve had three calves hit the ground with another two to go. The tally so far is two bulls (Ace and Live Wire) and one heifer (Nevada). Any bets on what’s next?
There is nothing cuter than fresh little beef calves…and nothing more intimidating than their mamas. Luckily, our mamas have been cooperating with us, but they’re never too far away when we’re tagging and caring for their newborn. It’s also a race to get our pasture fence up to snuff so we can let these ladies and babies out to graze.
Spring planting is underway! Per usual, Wisconsin weather has been unpredictable and it’s been a challenge to get into the fields to spray, verticle till or plant. Rain and even snow have delayed us, making from some agitated and testy farmers. Luckily, I wrote a blog on how to survive this season – check it out. And when we are in the field, at some point it becomes a family affair. We love taking daddy a warm meal and Avery loves getting to take a spin or try her hand at driving. How many two-year-olds can say they’ve driven a tractor?
Follow our adventures! Not physically on the farm, but a connection to the roots, we’ve started a Facebook page. This is a place where you can get to know us and why we do what we do. We want to help educate and break barriers around what farmers are (no straw hats and overalls required) and share our story about being young farmers trying to balance life, full-time work, kiddos, and the farm. We hope you’ll join us!
